J Smith & Son Repeater and Chronograph

A classical execution when it comes to repeating chronograph pocket watches from the late 19th century; plain savonet case, blued steel ‘spade’ hands and Roman numerals on a white enamel dial. In our opinion an indispensable model when it comes to collecting pocket watches.

Description

1880s outstanding 18 carat yellow gold quarter repeater pocket watch with chronograph function retailed by J Smith & Son – London.

This large and heavy example remains in all original and unrestored condition.
The unblemished enamel dial represents the classic configuration with large Roman hour indices, smaller Arabic minute markers and a 1/5 seconds chronograph indication. All four hands are produced in attractive blued steel.

The plain 18 carat heavy yellow gold case measures 53 millimeters without crown (66mm with crown).
Overall good condition, the case is showing normal sings of wear such as scratches and a few tiny dents.
All three lids bear a distinct and perfectly legible Swiss 18K gold hallmark.

Swiss made movement produced within the higher standars of watchmaking. Attractive mirror polished chronograph bridges, côtes de Geneva and a stunning engraved depiction of two shaking hands, a knight and the Latin phrase ‘Sine Dolo’, translating to ‘Without Deceit’.
The watch is fully functional. Running with fine accuracy, a perfect working chronograph function and both the hour and quarter repeater striking clear tones.
