Description
Exceptional pocket watch from 1759 made by the London maker J Willets. This double cased pocket watch remains in a superb and complete original condition, a rare sight considering this watch is 264 year old.
Classical 18th century slightly bulging dial showing black Roman hour and Arabic minute indications. The rare original blued steel ‘poker and beetle’ hands still present. The overall good looking dial is showing some signs of use (see pictures).
The outer repousse case remains in tremendous shape. No dents, cracks or soldering of any kind to be found on this exceptionally crafted case representing a mythological scene of a soldier with his horse and three others.
Both the front and back of this case are decorated with deep detailled floral patterns. The mythical representation is showing many of its original details indicating this watch has been taken well care of in the past 250+ years.
The inner case bears London hallmarks which dates this watch back to 1759 (year letter D). Both cases are made in a sturdy fashion and therefor carry more weight compared to other examples from the same era. Just like the outer case, we find the inner case to remain in good condition since the usage of more gold results in fewer dents and cracks.
The signed clean verge fusee movement has been thoroughly checked and is running well with a solid tick. Lovely hand cut balance bridge decorated with birds and flowers and square pillars.
