Description
Very fine gold verge fusee pocket watch from the mid 18th century with repeating function, made by the London maker Thomas Gardner. The watch is in exceptional condition given its refined finishes and the fragility that goes with it.
Classical enamel dial with Arabic hour indices, overall good looking with some light hairlines (see pictures). Golden arrow-shaped hands.
The outer repousse case shows very little signs of use. Apart from a miniscule spot on the knee of the person on the right, the case has not worn through at all. No cracks or soldering of any kind to be found on this exceptional piece of art representing a mythological scene of an interacting man and woman with a guarding soldier on their left.
Both the outer and inner case have beautiful floral decorated openings, which ensures that the sound of the repeater can be heard in its full glory. The mythical representation as well as the fragile decorative openings still have many of its original details indicating this watch has been taken well care of in the past 250+ years. Just like the outer case, we find the thick golden inner case to remain in exceptionally good condition, showing beautiful detailled decorations and an engraved troll on the side.
Signed verge fusee movement with beautiful hand cut balance bridge decorated with birds and flowers.
The movement is protected by its original signed solid silver dust cover.
The watch is fully functional with the repeater striking exceptionally clear and deep tones.
